CSI East Bay-Oakland Chapter presents
VARIABLE PROJECTS ARCHITECTURE, COMPUTATION and CRAFT , with special guest speaker Adam Marcus, AIA.
Scott’s Seafood Jack London Square – Oakland, CA
Our February dinner meeting program will be a presentation by Adam Marcus AIA. Adam is the Director of Variable Projects, an award-winning design and research office operating at the intersection of architecture, computation and fabrication. Adam will speak about his work exploring how new technologies can interface with longstanding architectural traditions of craft, materiality, ornament and pattern. His practice incorporates a broad range of techniques; BIM, parametric modeling software, robotic fabrication and full-scale prototyping. Though Adam may count robots, 3-D printers and enormous data sets as a part of his design arsenal, he often returns to the rudimentary tool of the PENCIL.
Adam is an Associate Professor at the California College of the Arts, Director of the Digital Craft Laboratory. Adam is also a Board Member and Communications Officer for ACADIA. He is also a partner in Futures North, a public art collaborative. Adam also taught at the University of Minnesota, Columbia University, Barnard College, and the Architectural Association’s Visiting School in Los Angeles. He was a recent speaker at INNOVATIONS, a conference in SF, sponsored by Architectural Record and the AIA. He was profiled as a “Firm to Watch” in the January 2016 issue of Architectural Record.
