The ASCE Golden Gate Branch January 2019 Dinner Program – 181 Fremont Street Tower

Golden Gate Branch, Structural Engineering Institute, and Young Members Forum will have a dinner presentation at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The evening topic will be the 181 Fremont Street Tower, San Francisco. The speakers will be Mr. Rob Smith and Mr. Kirk Ellison of ARUP.

Presentation:

181 Fremont Tower is a slender mixed-use building. Upon completion, the 181 Fremont Street Tower was the tallest mixed-use building in San Francisco. The project has been selected as the ASCE San Francisco Section Structural Project of the year.

The Speakers:

Rob Smith, P.E., S.E.
Kirk Ellison, P.E., G.E.

Rob Smith is an Associate Principal in Arup’s San Francisco office, where he leads their Advanced Technology and Research Group. He holds a degree in Engineering Science from Oxford University and is qualified as a civil and structural engineer in both California and the UK. He was the lead designer for the structural damping system on the 181 Fremont Tower Project. He has designed numerous tall structures throughout the world including in the Philippines, Mexico and the US.

Kirk Ellison is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with Arup in San Francisco. He has designed foundations for several tall structures in San Francisco including the Salesforce Tower and 181 Fremont Tower and was recently awarded the 2018 Outstanding Younger Civil Engineer for the ASCE San Francisco Section. Kirk received his MS Degree from Northwestern University in 2008 and his PhD from Cambridge University in 2012.
